The disadvantage of the boiler has scale and corrosion:
- Reduce heat transfer, reduce boiler effeciency
- Increased fuel cost due to increased blowdown requirement
- Increased electric, water consumption and increased waste water, exhaust emissions
- Caused boiler's damage --> failure boiler -->Stop machines --> caused huge cost due to spend time for replacing & repairing (at least from 7 to 10 days)
- Increased cleaning cost
- Increased chemical cost
- Caused danger for the boiler when it works
- It is one of the reasons that cause boiler explode suffering human, money and prestige
To reduce scale and corrosion in boilers, we use two methods which are mechanical and chemical
Mechanical methods:
 - Using the water softening system (Softener) to eliminate hardness ions in water (Ca ++. Mg ++), reducing scale and preventing scale forming when it enters the boiler.
- Using heating system to increase the temperature of feed water > 70 degree C to reduce content of O2, H2, CO2 ... in feed water
Chemical method
Control boiler water quality by using scale and corrosion inhibitor /sludge dispersant in order to protect the boiler
 - Take water sample periodic for testing, predicting scale forming and corrosion tendency which are happening in the system
 - Eliminate time and cost for replacing and repairing the block tubes (if donot have inhibitor)

Chemical method's advantage:
- Increase boiler age (up to 40 years if maintain well and right operation)
- Save fuel cost, electric, water cost; increase steam quality
- Save repairing cost, boiler cleaning cost
- Save time, donot need to stop boiler for cleaning, replacing block tubes which are caused by scale.
- During a period of time, without inhibitors, the boiler has to be clean (every 6 months)

Cleaning method: (have to stop the boiler from 1 to 2 days) helps eleminate corrosion, scale in boiler tubes (cause of tube blocked) in order to decrease wasting cost, protect the boiler. In case, the boiler has lots of scale, corrosion, the tubes will be blocked, damaged - waste time and repairing cost.

The effective acidity of chemical is not released until the compound is dissolved in water.
